Renowned legal voice Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman, Indian National Human Rights Protection Council, has expressed deep concern over the ED summons issued to Senior Advocate Pratap Venugopal in relation to legal advice provided to a client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis move sets a dangerous precedent. The independence of the legal profession and the sanctity of lawyer-client confidentiality are at grave risk,\u201d said Dr. Anthony Raju.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Threat to Rule of Law<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Raju emphasized that allowing investigative agencies to interrogate advocates for legal advice given in professional capacity threatens to undermine the very foundation of justice delivery in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSuch actions send a chilling message to all defence lawyers, particularly those representing clients in complex white-collar, commercial, or politically sensitive matters,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Raju highly appreciated the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) for urging the Hon\u2019ble Chief Justice of India to take suo motu cognizance of this serious issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
