“A Dangerous Precedent Against Legal Independence” — Dr. Anthony Raju on ED Summon to Sr. Advocate Pratap Venugopal

Calls for CJI’s Suo Motu Cognizance Applauded

New Delhi:
Renowned legal voice Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman, Indian National Human Rights Protection Council, has expressed deep concern over the ED summons issued to Senior Advocate Pratap Venugopal in relation to legal advice provided to a client.

“This move sets a dangerous precedent. The independence of the legal profession and the sanctity of lawyer-client confidentiality are at grave risk,” said Dr. Anthony Raju.

Threat to Rule of Law

Dr. Raju emphasized that allowing investigative agencies to interrogate advocates for legal advice given in professional capacity threatens to undermine the very foundation of justice delivery in India.

“Such actions send a chilling message to all defence lawyers, particularly those representing clients in complex white-collar, commercial, or politically sensitive matters,” he added.

Appreciation for SCAORA’s Timely Intervention

Dr. Raju highly appreciated the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) for urging the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India to take suo motu cognizance of this serious issue.

“SCAORA’s plea is a timely and courageous move. It reflects the legal fraternity’s collective resolve to protect constitutional freedoms and professional independence,” stated Dr. Raju.
